Callender Peak Winterhoek

Callender Peak Winterhoek
Sauvignon Blanc
(Ceres Plateau)

The Callender Peak wines offer a purity and freshness that only comes with cool climate viticulture. Expertly handled in the winery by Donovan Rall, he has managed to express real character in the wines with good weight and intensity. These are unique wines of real class. Due to its elevation and the population of skilled agricultural businesses, we believe Ceres Plateau is a WO that will become more and more important in the South African scene as time goes on.

Mielie Chenin Blanc

Mielie
Chenin Blanc
(Swartland)

This range is named after Camilla, Craig and Carla’s daughter, who call her “Mielie”. This is the only blended wines in the Testalonga range – all other wines are single variety-single vineyard.

Hand harvested and whole bunch pressed. The wine is a blend of three vineyards which were co fermented in a 5,000L concrete tank for 6 months then racked off its gross lees and placed back into the concrete tank. No yeast (or other) inoculation or additives apart from a small amount of SO2 shortly before bottling were added. The purity of fruit this year and the very soft edges makes this wine delicious in our opinion. ” – Craig Hawkins, Winemaker

Julien Schaal ‘Mountain Vineyards’ Chardonnay

Julien Schaal ‘Mountain Vineyards’
Chardonnay
(Elgin)

A purest’s approach to Chardonnay.

“From Elgin fruit. Matured for 12 months in barrel, 10% new. Struck-match reduction before green apple, citrus and a trace of leesy complexity. The palate is light but not too light – great fruit definition, fresh acidity and a savoury finish. As ever, a nicely understated, well balanced wine.”

The Foundry Viognier

The Foundry Viognier
Stellenbosch WO

“Honeysuckle, yellow apple, peach and some leesy complexity on the nose while the palate is nicely contained and rather less blowsy than wines from this variety can often be – good fruit concentration and punchy acidity, the finish savoury. Harmonious and layered."
- Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za

Joostenberg Estate ‘Noble Late Harvest’ Chenin Blanc

Joostenberg Estate ‘Noble Late Harvest’
Chenin Blanc (375ml)

This wine has become one of Joostenberg’s most popular and recognised wines. A huge amount of effort, both in the vineyard and the winery, is put into it every year. It is very dependent on weather conditions and this means the volume produced and the characteristics of the wine vary greatly from year to year.

Grapes were sourced from a 30 year old, organically farmed, unirrigated Chenin Blanc vineyard on Joostenberg. The grapes were “whole-bunch” pressed and the resulting juice was fermented, using natural yeast. Fermentation was allowed to carry on until it stopped on its own accord. Fermentation and maturation occurred in oak barrels.

Myburgh Bros ‘Little J’ Red

Myburgh Bros
‘Little J’ Red
(Paarl)

Syrah 45%, Cinsault 55%

The vineyards are situated on Hercules Pillar and Klipdam farms in the south-western part of the Paarl wine region. Locals call the area Muldersvlei. Soils are a combination of decomposed granite and clay shale. Winters are cold and wet, and the summer months are relatively dry and warm. Proximity to the ocean is about 30km and this has a positive, moderating effect on the temperatures in the months leading up to harvest. The vineyards are low yielding, dry-farmed and trained as bush vines.

Grapes were hand-picked and were partially (50%) de-stemmed. Fermentation took place in small, open-topped tanks and special care was put into limiting excessive extraction. The resulting wine was transferred to seasoned oak barrels (61%) and stainless steel tanks (39%). After 10 months of maturation, the various components were blended and bottled. The wine was subject to a minimal amount of filtration and stabilisation to maintain as much purity as possible. A small, natural and harmless deposit might form in the bottle over time.

Van Loggerenberg ‘Break A Leg’

Van Loggerenberg
‘Break A Leg’
Merlot

The first wine named Break A Leg was from Van Loggerenberg Wine’s maiden vintage 2016. Lukas ripped his knee apart in an accident just prior to this first solo harvest. He had already borrowed heavily to get the money together for the first vintage of Van Loggerenberg Wines, so his good friend David Sadie (of David & Nadia fame) suggested that Lukas make a rosé-styled wine to help with the hospital bills, and Break A Leg was born.

What a wine! This is a serious little drink. Perhaps better suited to Cabernet drinkers who don’t want to spend Cabernet money. Classy stuff.

Thorne & Daughters ‘Copper Pot’

Thorne & Daughters
‘Copper Pot’
Pinot Noir

John and Tasha Seccombe of Thorne & Daughters love Pinot Noir for its supple, delicate power and its ability to elegantly and honestly express its origins.

“We take to heart the challenge of producing a great wine from this exacting varietal and like so many other Pinot lovers you will often find a bottle on our table."

They vinify the wine as sympathetically as possible with wild yeasts, a percentage of whole cluster ferments and maturation in old oak barrels.

Copper Pot shows aromas of bright pomegranate, hibiscus and raspberry coulis, with underlying notes of pine needle and wild herbs. In the mouth it is finely balanced showing an integrated acidity and fine tannins, these being balanced out by generous red fruit and fennel freshness. The finish is satisfyingly dry with a touch of nutmeg and earthiness.

Trizanne Signature Wines ‘TSW’ Cinsault

Trizanne Signature Wines
‘TSW’
Cinsault (Swartland)

Hand picked from 15 to 25-year-old dryland vines on Swartland shale and decomposed granite soils. 100% destemmed and naturally fermented in open top fermenters. The wine was matured with French oak for approximately 4 months. No fining took place.
A youthful punch of red fruits on the nose with a delightfully perfumed touch. That continues on the harmonious and well-weighted palate. A youthful, delicious wine with a crunchy acidity and a lingering finish.
